Inglorious Bastards Details Begin To Emerge

Quentin has confirmed that he's finished with the Inglorious Bastards screenplay and is heading directly into pre-production though no casting decisions have yet been made.

"I don't want it to feel like a period film. I want it to feel current. "I want it to feel right now. One of the things I have to battle against is 30 years of Nazi-occupation TV movies where we've all seen the big streets and the vintage cars and the Swastikas, and we've just seen that ad nauseum."

"This is a modern, in-your-face movie. This is not a TV movie period piece."

Inglorious Bastards - Another Split Film?

Here we go again. AICN is reporting that Inglorious Bastards will be 2 films [thanks Andrew].

I really hated the idea of splitting up Kill Bill into two movies, but as it turned out, I liked the result. The whole flavor of Kill Bill 2 was very different from Kill Bill 1, so the split worked.

But I just don't like the trend that I'm seeing. Kill Bill - split. Grindhouse - split. Inglorious Bastards - split.

Tim Roth Clueless On Inglorious Bastards Status

Since Tarantino mentioned having Inglorious Bastards ready for Cannes in 2009 there have been a few stories about him backing out of a film festival to work on the film. I still have a hard time believing we'll see this film in 2009 and the report that Tim Roth hasn't heard anything from QT just cements that idea.

In order to get this film to Cannes next year, shooting has to begin soon - this fall at the latest. But in order to shoot the movie, he's got to finalize his cast and make sure that they don't have other commitments already lined up that will conflict with Inglorious Bastards.

Tarantino Promises Inglorious Bastards in 2009

Tarantino is making very public promises to finish Inglorious Bastards. At the Cannes Film Festival, he told the audience he would have the film ready for the 2009 Festival. Here's the money quote from the video linked above:

"The next movie I'm doing is my WWII movie Inglorious Bastards. I actually just finished the first draft of the script and when I go home I'll be finishing it up ... and if all goes well... I will be here 2009 at Cannes with my war film Inglorious Bastards.

Lots of folks are skeptical about that date - even making references to the long-ago promised Chinese Democracy album from Guns N Roses.

Personally, I think there's no way in hell it'll be ready by this time next year - it still has to be cast, filmed and edited. If QT is really done with the script, 2010 is more likely.

Thanks to Guillaume and Filias and Matt for the heads up on this.

QT Talks Death Proof Reaction

Sight & Sound has an interview with Quentin about the reaction to Death Proof up. Inglorious Bastards comes up early and it sounds like QT hasn't done much work on it of late.

Inglorious Bastards, Maybe Not Next

An interview with Quentin from Event Guide that turns out to be not good news for those (like me) wanting to see Inglorious Bastards anytime soon.

"I've got this Word War Two script I'm working on called Inglorious Bastards, which has been around for a while, and it'll be the biggest thing I've ever done. I probably have another year of writing on that left. I can't say it's going to be my next movie because I have to finish the script, and I have to like it, but it's what I'm working on."

Inglorious Bastards Cast Discussion

QT is being asked about Inglorious Bastards while he's out doing publicity for Death Proof outside the US. Here he is addressing some of the many casting rumors that have floated around.

I never said it was going to star Bruce Willis, Schwarzenegger and Stallone. I don't know who's going to be in it at this point. I have to write it first. It always starts with me and the characters. Whenever I cast an actor and try to write the character around it I always end up regretting it, so I always try to write the character and cast the actor to fit the character.

Inglorious Bastards DVD!

The wait is over for Inglorious Bastards, its gone straight to DVD! Just kidding.

This is the DVD to the film that provides some inspiration for the upcoming Tarantino film. This is obviously where the title comes from, but the actual story line is not the same. [via TwitchFilm]

QT Talks Inglorious Bastards A Tiny Bit

QT talked a bit about Inglorious Bastards while over in Germany, but he says he doesn't want to say too much as it might "jinx it".

If I speak about it, I will jinx it. I will talk about it when it is done.

It is sort of a spaghetti western set in World War 2. I am not going to call it this, but if I had a subtitle for it, it would be Once Upon a Time in Nazi-occupied France.

Competition For Inglorious Bastards

If Quentin is still serious about making Inglorious Bastards his next film, he may want to get moving on the project ASAP. It looks like Joel Silver and Zak Penn are going to be re-making The Dirty Dozen.

Inglorious Bastards isn't the same film, but its similar enough that it could cause box office troubles if they both get released near the same time. And given the box office problems that GRINDHOUSE had, taking that risk might not be such a hot idea.

So Quentin, get moving!

Sly Stallone Interested In Inglorious Bastards

The old rumor that Sly Stallone will be Inglorious Bastards is back again with Stallone saying that he'd love to do the film. [thanks to everybody who sent this in]

Stallone also claims that he passed up the chance to play a role in Grind House (I assume the role that Kurt Russell ultimately got) because of some scheduling conflicts.

Back to this Inglorious Bastards rumor with Stallone. I can see it happening, but I sure hope it doesn't. I really, really dislike Stallone and think he may be the worst possible choice to appear in a Tarantino film. The man literally can't pronounce words right, how the heck is he going to be able to deliver Tarantino-esque dialogue. So lets all pray for more scheduling conflicts from Sly.

UPDATE: LatinoReview.com is reporting that Stallone is a "lock" for Inglorious Bastards.

Grindhouse Casting

There is a possibility that John Jarratt will appear in 'Grind House'. QT has apparently said that Jarratt is his favorite Aussie actor.

Dark Horizons is reporting that Jarratt has already signed for 'Grind House' and may have a role in Inglorious Bastards as well.

Inglorious Bastards, The 6 Hour Script

Just something else to chew on about Inglorious Bastards. Movies Online has a first hand report that Michael Madsen said the script runs about 6 hours so we are probably looking at another split movie, ala Kill Bill.

Grind House Details, Plus Bastards Info

Tarantino talks Grind House and Inglorious Bastards, with a tidbit in there about Vega Brothers.

As previously reported, Grind House will be in 2 parts. Robert Rodriguez part is called Planet Terror and Tarantino's section will be Death Proof. Rodriguez film has a zombie theme and Tarantino's is a slasher film, but with a car.

The film will also feature trailers for fictional movies:
"That's one of the things we're looking the most forward to, shooting the phony trailers that will play in between the movies. I'm working out my blaxploitation trailer, and possibly a kung-fu trailer, a sexploitation trailer, a spaghetti-western trailer. I just need to kind of work them out a little bit. I'm just getting them down there, but I think for sure I'm going to do the sexploitation trailer, which is called Cowgirls in Sweden. "
As for Inglorious Bastards, here's what QT had to say:
...will probably be the next thing I do after I finish Grind House. That will be my next big Mount Everest, climb-the-mountain kind of project.

I've got a big portion of it done. I've been waiting for all the Kill Bill stuff to be over with, and then to maybe chill on it a little bit, and then [get] ready to finish writing it. ... I have like five years of writing behind me now, and I just need to add one more year to it.

Eddie Murphy Confirms Rumors

Eddie Murphy has confirmed that QT talked to him about Inglorious Bastards, but says there is no deal currently in place.

He also mentioned that Tarantino talked to him about possibly writing another Beverly Hills Cop movie for him. That was something I'd never heard mentioned before.

Madsen Leaks Inglorious Bastards Details

Michael Madsen has spilled the beans on Inglorious Bastards. Apparently, the script is complete, and filming is supposed to begin later this year.

Madsen also dropped a few names as folks already cast:
Michael Madsen (of course)
Adam Sandler (long rumored - QT and he are pals)
Tim Roth (first I've heard, but not suprising
Eddie Murphy (say what?)

I certainly didn't see Eddie Murphy coming, and considering he's done pretty much nothing but kids movies for the past few years I figured he'd taken himself out of the serious movie game. But, I think he's actually a great choice. Because of his stand-up comedy roots, he's great at the kind of on-screen conversational banter that QT loves to write.

Schwarzenegger In Bastards?

The rumors of Bruce Willis and Sly Stallone I've heard and reported before. I believe they are a real possibility. The talk of Schwarzenegger I think is bogus.

Here's what Quentin supposedly said:
"I've said it once and I am going to say it again. I want Bruce, Sly and Arnold for my World War II epic. I have always dream of having these 3 superstars together in a movie. Initially Inglorious Bastards was suppose to be in production way back in 1998 with these casts but I shifted my attention on my other projects such as Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction and Sin City.
No source, just a couple of quotes. And it sounds awfully silly for Tarantino to have shifted his attention to Pulp Fiction 4 years after its release.

Inglorious Bastards Split?

Film Focus has an interview with Michael Madsen in which he talks about Sin City and the upcoming Inglorious Bastards.
Yeah, we were talking about Inglorious Bastards a couple of hours a go," Madsen told FilmFocus, "he's got an interesting idea of how to make it. I think he's going to cut it up into a couple of different parts, 'cos it's a big story to tell and he doesn't want to cram it all into one show. I don't know the whole story of how he's going to do it but eventually we'll get there, you know."

Madsen also told us the project was one very close to him, "I'm looking forward to doing it," he said, "my father's brother was killed in World War 2, my dad was in the Navy and my cousin Kenny was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam. I've always wanted to play a soldier and being able to do it was Quentin is obviously going to be a great time. A great experience, you know. I think his take on it is gonna be... different. It ain't gonna be the norm that's for sure."
Please tell me that cutting Bastards into multiple movies is absolutely necessary. Splitting Kill Bill ticked off alot of people, and probably hurt the movie's chance at being seriously considered for many awards. Lets hope we aren't headed down that road again over a film that might be 30 minutes longer than the studio would like. Please, QT - one movie.

More Confirmation Of Inglorious Bastards

FilmFocus has an interview with Tarantino where he confirms (or as close to it as he ever gets) that Inglorious Bastards is next, probalby followed by the Mandarin language film.
"I want do a Mandarin language movie, but I'm not sure it'll be the next movie. It'll probably be the next movie I do after the one I do next. I'm doing Inglorious Bastards next. It's my bunch-of-guys-on-a-mission movie. It's my World War 2 movie."

The film will star Michael Madsen for definite, more on that later in the week, and names like Adam Sandler and Bo Svenson have been circling around the project. Tarantino told us it was too early to talk cast, but that he has some people in mind.
I'm glad to see that QT is being consistent with what he's telling people - that indicates to me that he has likely made a decision and isn't just winging it when asked about future plans.

Willis and Stallone In Bastards?

I wouldn't put a ton of stock into this rumor, but with the otherwise complete lack of info about the project, the idea that QT has written parts for Bruce Willis & Sylvester Stallone in Inglorious Bastards is as good as I can do right now. Willis I can understand, but Stallone?

Inglorious Bastards DELAYED!?

This'll come as a shock to everybody, but Tarantino has told Total Film Mazine that Inglorious Bastards is not next on his list of projects, and that he intends to make a kung-fu film shot in Mandarin. Here are the QT quotes:
"My next movie is gonna be another kung fu that's gonna blow your asses off. Everyone still thinks I'm doing Inglorious Bastards next but before I do I want to do something much smaller," Tarantino said.

"The next movie will be in Mandarin. I enjoyed shooting all the Japanese stuff in Kill Bill so much that this whole film will be entirely in Mandarin.

"If you're not up to watching it with subtitles, I really want to do a full-on dubbed version. Maybe shooting two Kill Bill movies has spoiled me but fuck it - sue me."
Maybe this is bullshit, though it wouldn't really suprise me if it was true. The Total Film forum doesn't have anything posted about this story just yet. The story has been picked up by loads of news sites though.

UPDATE: Here's some more, including a few quotes from the guy that did the interview w/ Quentin.

UPDATE #2: Discuss at the forum thread.

Tarantino At Venice Film Festival

Quentin spent this past weekend hosting a sideline event to the Venice Film Festival - the 'Italian kings of the Bs' festival. This B-Movie showing featured about 20 screenings of spaghetti westerns and erotic comedy's from the 50's, 60's and 70's.

Also, thanks to MP for sending in a series of photos of QT at the event. Much appreciated.

The Guardian story does end with a strange paragraph about Inglorious Bastards:
Tarantino is also reported to have bought the rights to reproduce a B-movie by another of his heroes, Enzo Castellari, with Samuel Jackson and George Clooney tipped to star in the remake of his 1977 Second World War comedy, Inglorious Bastards.
As far as I know, thats not correct. I haven't heard Clooney's name mentioned in a long time (though it wouldn't suprise me), have never heard Jackson's name associated w/ this movie, and it is most definately not a remake.

Inglorious Bastards Details

Tarantino's thoughts on the direction he wants his next film - Inglorious Bastards - to go:
"When I eventually make my World War II movie, Inglorious Bastards, it will use Robert Aldrich's The Dirty Dozen and a lot of those late-'60s/early-'70s epic war movies as a starting-off point - pictures like Where Eagles Dare.

"More so even than Kill Bill - it will be my true spaghetti Western-influenced film, but set in Nazi-occupied France instead of the Old West. I see it as a time when you had these no-man's lands in Europe that really did resemble the Western landscapes of Sergio Leone [director of the Clint Eastwood 'Dollars' trilogy]."

What Took Tarantino So Long?

According to Christopher Kelly, most of the time between Jackie Brown and Kill Bill was spent working on the screenplay for Inglorious Bastards. While that's true, what Kelly doesn't mention is that the whole schedule for Kill Bill and Inglorious Bastards got pushed back because of Uma Thurman's pregnancy. Kelly is also 'worried' about just who wants to see a Tarantino movie these days:
There's also this question: Who, exactly, is his audience supposed to be this time around? The college kids Tarantino connected with in the early 1990s likely still consider themselves fans. But at this point, burned out long ago on all the Tarantino wannabes of the late '90s, they might prefer to give their box-office dollars to the more playful and droll Coen Brothers (whose Intolerable Cruelty also opens Oct. 10). As for today's college kids -- will they have even seen Reservoir Dogs, much less care about its director's motor-mouthed, movie-obsessed aesthetic?

Michael Madsen Confirms Vega Brothers Movie

The rumor of a Vega Brothers (Vincent, from Pulp Fiction, and Vic (Mr. Blonde) from Reservoir Dogs) movie has been around a while and usually dismissed as impossible because it would be a prequel and both Madsen and Travolta are too old looking to pull it off. Well, Madsen says differently:
"All I can say is Quentin wants to make The Vega Brothers. He already has it in his head. But it has to be soon. Maybe next year? It will be set in Amsterdam."
If it is made next year, it would have to be after Inglorious Bastards because that is apparently next in line for Quentin.

Tarantino Attends Adam Sandler Wedding

Adam Sandler got married this weekend to his lontime girlfriend (here's the pics), and none other than Quentin Tarantino was in attendance. This may seem a bit off-topic, but I think its a pretty good hint that the semi-rumors of Tarantino's next film - Inglorious Bastards - are legit. Inglorious Bastards, for those that haven't heard, is a long rumored WW2 film that is supposed to star Adam Sandler and Michael Madsen.

Vega Brothers Rumors Re-Surface

There have been rumors of Quentin Tarantino making a 'Vega Brothers' movie for years now. The movie is supposed to reunite Vic & Vincent Vega (Michael Madsen from Reservoir Dogs and John Travolta from Pulp Fiction) in a prequel of some sort. Today, Dark Horizons posted the following snippit:
The Vega Brothers: Long ago it was thought the two brother characters who appeared in separate Tarantino flicks would come together in one movie - now could it be finally going ahead? 'Tim' has the details: "I auditioned for a role and got chatting with the lovely casting director who indicated the "vega brothers" movie is going ahead. She says it will be huge because its a huge ensemble, and says it's going to have Travolta in it, Madsen, Samuel L. Jackson and all the Tarantino regulars - but a lot of roles available for young women, because it's set in bars and nightclubs, hence, strippers, barmaids, waitress roles will be available. Tarantino wants to do it later this year. I would so love to be a part of this but she said nearly every male role is a 'name'".
The second to last sentence in that snippit seems unlikely, as Tarantino has talked quite a bit about beginning work on Inglorious Bastards (a war film) once Kill Bill has wrapped up. As a 'response' to the Dark Horizons rumor, Sebastian from the QT Archives then posted an explanation of why 'Vega Brothers' is a rumor and nothing more.

Inglorious Bastards - Tarantino's 5th Film?

I'm not sure how this will fit in with the news I've read about Tarantino's plans to make a Vega Brothers film this year, but he's also apparently wanting to film a World War 2 movie with Michael Madsen and Adam Sandler called Inglorious Bastards. The AICN link above is a bit old, and some newer information can be had here. So far, a 2004 Cannes Film Festival release is the plan.
