GRINDHOUSE 6-Disc DVD Set

Even though GRINDHOUSE was eventually broken into 2 separate films, there is going to be a 6-disc DVD release of the whole double feature with special features ... in Japan. [thanks Taylor]

Still no fake trailers from the description that SlashFilm has. This makes the lack of any type of combined DVD release in the US even more disappointing.

GRINDHOUSE 2 RUMORS

I rather doubt that it'll happen, but the little bits of info about GRINDHOUSE 2 possibilities continue to float around.

"Robert (Rodriguez) said he'd do it (Machete) and asked for us to be in it," they explain, "Robert wants to do GRINDHOUSE 2 with (the two films being) "Machete" and "The Babysitter Twins."

Competition For Inglorious Bastards

If Quentin is still serious about making Inglorious Bastards his next film, he may want to get moving on the project ASAP. It looks like Joel Silver and Zak Penn are going to be re-making The Dirty Dozen.

Inglorious Bastards isn't the same film, but its similar enough that it could cause box office troubles if they both get released near the same time. And given the box office problems that GRINDHOUSE had, taking that risk might not be such a hot idea.

So Quentin, get moving!

    Death Proof Questionnaire

Hey folks, I'm always getting emails from film students with lots of questions about QT's filmmaking style, and I rarely have the time to respond properly. But Rebekah was smart enough to pose her questions in the form of a questionnaire that any of you can fill out after watching GRINDHOUSE this weekend.

Rebekah is pursuing her PhD in Film Studies at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and the questionnaire is short and sweet - so lets help her out.

    NC-17 For GRINDHOUSE?

GRINDHOUSE may need significant edits to avoid an NC-17 rating. Page Six has the dirt on some of the more problematic scenes (one example after the jump).

QT had similar problems with Kill Bill - thats why some of the Crazy 88 scene is in black and white (so that the blood is black instead of red). For whatever reason, its OK to hack someone to pieces on screen, just so long as they don't bleed red blood.

    The GRINDHOUSE Split

Inglorious Bastards got a sneak look at the European poster for GRINDHOUSE. It looks suspiciously like this poster, but with just a few 'screw you' edits.

It really sucks that QT isn't willing to stand up for movie to be shown in one piece. I've heard the argument that the double-feature is a uniquely American experience and so the rest of the world isn't expecting it - but, if the GRINDHOUSE format of a double-feature is so great, why not use his influence to introduce it to those that haven't experienced it before.

In this interview QT talks about doing what he wants with his films.

"Man, I'd love to do an opening to a movie like that." And someone said: "Yeah, they wouldn't let you."

People have said little things like that all my life. But who's "they"? I've given nobody the authority over me to say I can't do anything - I can do anything I want or can achieve. I don't ask permission. I might ask forgiveness, but I won't ask permission. There is no "they".

Here's the thing: they can write a mean letter, they can write a mean memo, but these guys don't have any real fight in them. If you're an artist, as opposed to a careerist, and your movie is more important to you than a career in this town, they can never beat you. You have a loaded gun, and you know you've got what it takes to put it in their faces and blow their heads off.

Quentin, get your gun out and take a stand. GRINDHOUSE is one movie. One experience. Introduce the rest of the world to the genre you feel so passionate about. In the format you feel so passionate about - the double feature.

    Savini Floats GRINDHOUSE Rumors

Tom Savini talks GRINDHOUSE over at Fangoria. Mostly promo-type stuff, but he does float a couple of rumors:

    1. The fake trailers in GRINDHOUSE may get made into actual full-length feature films. I find this highly unlikely - though since Rob Zombie is involved it becomes possible (he'll put anything on film).

    2. We may get treated to future GRINDHOUSE films from QT and RR if all goes well. This is pretty likely at this point, though I expect that it would probably not be something they'd want to tackle right away. Maybe in 2012.

    Make A GRINDHOUSE Trailer

Anybody wanting some attention from Tarantino or Rodriguez as a filmmaker ought to enter the SWSX Grindhouse Trailer contest.

Filmmakers have a deadline of February 12 to submit their 'grindhouse trailer' (no longer than two minutes in length) to SXSW. The trailer should be made for a fictional feature-film, just like those being made by celebrity directors Eli Roth and Rob Zombie for Grindhouse. From those submissions, Rodriguez will determine the best of the bunch, and it will screen during a special presentation entitled 'Robert Rodriguez's Grindhouse 101' on Sunday, March 11. During the presentation, Rodriguez will share stories and footage from the making of the upcoming Dimension Films release.

Get on it. You've only got till February 12th.

Wow! It is that fucking good. Hence, why I gave it an A+ because it is a complete miracle. There is a structure, there is a character arc, there is some setup/payoff action going on with the dialogue. The writing is super clean and lean and it is a good story that's well told. Nuff said.

Why Mickey Rourke Missed Grind House

In an interview with Mickey Rourke, Radar asked him about why he didn't end up in Grind House. His answer doesn't clear much of anything up:

Radar: After turning down Pulp Fiction, why did you pass up the opportunity to work with Tarantino on his latest project, Grindhouse?

Rourke: You know what? He hasn't made any comments about it. And until he makes a comment about it, I'm not going to say anything. It just didn't work out. And I hope that's what he has to say. I'm just going to wait.

Seems to me that Mickey is pissed off at Quentin.

    Grind House Trailer Details

Some confirmation of what most of us already knew or suspected. The Grind House trailer was a mixture of Rodriguez's Planet Terror (referred to as Planet Doom incorrectly in the article) and one of the fake trailers - undoubtedly Machete.

Also from this same article, we get news that both Rodriguez and QT's parts are standard length films of about 90 minutes, so with the fake trailers mixed in the final product should clock in at just over 3 hours.

I'm glad the first trailer that came out had a very 'fun' feel to it. I think that perfectly captures what these old Grind House style movies are about.

    Obscure Grind House Mention

How is it that a newspaper allows somebody to write a story about You Tube who knows nothing about it, or the videos they are watching. Get a load of this:

So yesterday, as part of my training for Next G, I YouTubed for the first time. I found a music video for "Children of the Universe", a trailer for something called "Grind House" (which may or may not be a spoof), and a clip showing-off a cockroach-controlled mobile robot.

It looks like pretty much all the footage is from Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror portion of the film.

    Grind House Casting News

John Jarratt was the first person I can remember being unofically case in Grind House. Now it turns out that he never made it into the movie at all.

"My wife Cody was excited. We'd got the passport thing sorted out and we were all ready to set off for the States with our two kids, just waiting for a start date, so it was a real kick in the guts when nothing happened,'' he told Woman's Day. "I'm really bewildered. God knows, Quentin might ring up next week and say he's ready to start, 'Get over here'. And might do it but I might not. I kind of wish he'd left me alone and it had never happened.''

Well, maybe Tarantino nixed him from the film because he's getting interviewed by magazines like Woman's Day.

    Kurt Russell In Grind House

With Mickey Rourke flaking out of his deal to star in Tarantino's portion of Grind House, QT went and picked up Kurt Russell to fill the void. I was fine with the Rourke casting, but this is definately an upgrade.

    Mickey Rourke No-Shows Death Proof

Its being reported everywhere (with the Grind House forum as the primary source) that Mickey Rourke no-showed for his leading role in Tarantino's Death Proof. Not a good move for his career, but I'm sure Tarantino will be able to find somebody to replace him pretty easily.

Thanks to Danny for giving me the heads up on this. I've been traveling alot so I'm not as on top of breaking news as usual.

UPDATE: The Grind House forum folks say they never specifically said Rourke no-showed. Looking at the thread again, some other commenter mentioned the no-show but was not corrected. I just read it wrong.

    Grind House Companion Book Update

First mentioned back in late 2005, it was supposed to be a summer release. But, with the delay in the release date for the film itself, its not suprising that the book is now scheduled for February 28, 2007.

Its already available for pre-order from Amazon.

UPDATE: The GRINDHOUSE Companion Book is now shipping.

    Death Proof Script

The Grind House forum sent out a notification today that they've gotten ahold of the full script for Death Proof, Quentin Tarantino's half of the upcoming Grind House.

They seem to have pretty good sources, so I wouldn't expect that they will leak the whole script on the net, but they may share a few bits of info with everyone. (hey, we can hope, right!)

Grind House Release Moved To 2007

The release date for Grind House has been pushed back, again, to April of 2007. And just like we said the last time, it'll probably get pushed back at least 1 more time.

And in a very weird turn of events, Fergie has been cast in Grind House? Yes, Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas.

    Death By Stereo Logo

Notice the similarities in the logos?

It was pointed out in the comments to this article about the Death Proof script cover that the logo on Stuntman Mike's car is very similar/identical to the logo for the band Death By Stereo.

Now, we can't read too much into this as it is just a script cover, and not something that typically gets spread around for public consumption. So maybe somebody just slapped the logo on there because they thought it looked cool. But maybe there's a possible soundtrack connection. Maybe.

By the way, the actual image I used for the Death By Stereo logo is from this belt buckle. Or, maybe we should start calling it a Stuntman Mike Belt Buckle.

    Death Proof Script Review

Over at Script Zone, they have a review of the Death Proof script [via Dark Horizons]:
The basic plot follows a trio of young girls (Jungle Julia, Arlene, and Shanna) as they spend their night bar hopping, going after and teasing boys, and getting trashed. Meanwhile, a muscle car driving stuntman named Mike (Mickey Rouke is rumored to be in the role) with a unique sexual fetish stalks the girls and, ultimately, uses his car to terrorize them.
The reviewer thinks QT is going to have a problem getting the script cut down to an appropriate length for Grind House.

    Grind House Pauses

Tarantino.info is reporting that Grind House has shut down production - but from everything I've seen written, it seems more like they are taking a week off. Apparently the not-so-subtle difference between those two has been lost on most people.

UPDATE: This may explain the production stoppage.

    Keaton In Grindhouse?

Rumors are flying that Michael Keaton has been cast in Grindhouse. Keaton apparently told an autograph seeker that he has a role in the Robert Rodriguez portion of Grindhouse (either called Planet Terror or Project Terror, both titles have been floating around).

    Grind House Companion Book

Looks like Tarantino and Rodriguez are going to release a companion book to go along with the Grind House movie. Tarantino had planned to do something similar with Kill Bill, and the project ended up being scrapped for unknown reasons - hopefully this one makes it to market.

Here are some details from the Trouble Maker Publishing website. The image below is apparently the proposed book cover. [thanks to Jules for the tip]

Grind House Details, Plus Bastards Info

Tarantino talks Grind House and Inglorious Bastards, with a tidbit in there about Vega Brothers.

As previously reported, Grind House will be in 2 parts. Robert Rodriguez part is called Planet Terror and Tarantino's section will be Death Proof. Rodriguez film has a zombie theme and Tarantino's is a slasher film, but with a car.

The film will also feature trailers for fictional movies:
"That's one of the things we're looking the most forward to, shooting the phony trailers that will play in between the movies. I'm working out my blaxploitation trailer, and possibly a kung-fu trailer, a sexploitation trailer, a spaghetti-western trailer. I just need to kind of work them out a little bit. I'm just getting them down there, but I think for sure I'm going to do the sexploitation trailer, which is called Cowgirls in Sweden. "
As for Inglorious Bastards, here's what QT had to say:
...will probably be the next thing I do after I finish Grind House. That will be my next big Mount Everest, climb-the-mountain kind of project.

I've got a big portion of it done. I've been waiting for all the Kill Bill stuff to be over with, and then to maybe chill on it a little bit, and then [get] ready to finish writing it. ... I have like five years of writing behind me now, and I just need to add one more year to it.

    Rodriguez Details Grind House

Robert Rodriguez talked to MTV about the progress on Grind House. There is a treasure trove of little tidbits planned for this movie in the ariticle - make sure you check it out.
The Texas-born filmmaker revealed that he's currently holed up at Tarantino's Los Angeles abode, and they're working both together and separately. "I'm at his house now writing it," Rodriguez said of the film that they expect to shoot "probably in the fall ... They're two different movies, but he reads me stuff and I tell him stuff that I do."

    Tarantino To Make 'Grind House'

Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez are going to write and direct a horror film called Grind House.

Miramax Films golden children Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez are teaming up to make a film for the new company established by the studio's founders, Bob and Harvey Weinstein.

Tarantino and Rodriguez will each write and direct a 60-minute horror film, and the two films will be packaged under the title 'Grind House', which is planned for a spring 2006 release through the Weinstein Co.

Tarantino says that this could be the first in a series of films. No official word on what this does to the timeline for getting Inglorious Bastards finished - but I smell a delay.
